The German Shepherd Dog |
The NYPD Transit Bureau chooses to utilize German Shepherd dogs in the K-9 Unit, because they have historically proven themselves as effective Police Dogs. The German Shepherd dog is distinguished because of its loyalty, courage, and ability to absorb and retain training to perform a number of special services. These dogs have inherited traits that make them even tempered, poised, and confident. These dogs also have well developed instinctive drives, and an ability to create a strong bond with the handler. It is these traits that will help the dog train for police work. Traditionally, our department relied on the public to donate dogs for Police work. However, in the past few years we have opted to deal with breeders who offer and guarantee dogs with the traits and physical attributes necessary for Police work. Our dogs must also pass a thorough medical screening at the Animal Medical Center (AMC) in Manhattan, one of the leading Animal Medical Centers in the country. This is done to ensure that they are fit for duty as a police dog

If any breed of dog is most deserving of the title Noble with Natural Beauty then that dog is the German Shepherd.
He is a dog with elegant yet flowing lines, glamorous to behold, with a shining coat, erect ears, and an intelligent expression that will command attention wherever he is seen. His eyes indicate the love and affection he has for those who care for him and his sweeping tail will show his mood whether it be gay or sad.
By nature a German Shepherd is wary of strangers, though once one is accepted by him he is a friend for life. He is an efficient obedience worker, quick to learn and what is learned will never be forgotten. It is an active breed and thrives on work—little is beyond its capabilities. Fleet of foot, powerful yet graceful and nimble, he is the epitome of those qualities considered to be ideal within a dog.
He loves human companionship and will respond to his owner’s mood whether this be lying quietly by his side or romping across the fields; indeed, at all times, his one desire is to be with you and to please you.
He has a keen sense of humor and enjoys playful games yet, in defense of those he loves, can become a frightening adversary that one would be well advised to keep clear of. He can fit in an apartment or a mansion for he is happy wherever you are happy.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger Announces Grant to NYPD Transit K-9 Team

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger announced today that The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation at The Giving Back Fund will be distributing a grant to The New York City Police Foundation to purchase, train, and care for a canine in the NYPD Transit Bureau’s Canine Team.
The Transit Bureau’s Canine Units of New York City are proactive and highly visible law enforcement teams used to benefit the citizens of New York while they access the transit system. The canine units respond to emergency incidents, search and rescue calls as well as terror threats. They are also an invaluable resource in deterring and defusing potential conflict situations within New York City’s various transportation mediums, such as: trains, buses, ferries and trams.
“Through the generosity of the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation, the NYPD has been able to put another highly qualified canine on patrol in the nation’s largest city, helping it keep New York the safest among the nation’s large cities,” said New York Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly
“Across our country, police and firemen risk their lives to protect our communities, and K-9 units provide a critical resource, “said Ben Roethlisberger about the grant. “ I hope my contribution can add to their efforts and encourage others to support our police and fire departments and the dogs that assist them.”
This NFL season The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation is distributing grants to Police and Fire Departments in Pittsburgh and in the cities and surrounding communities of each regular season away opponent for the Steelers.
The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation seeks to provide support for police and fire departments throughout the US and to enhance the quality of life for residents of Findlay, OH and Pittsburgh, PA.
